Challenges to Accomplishing Venezuela’s New Vision for Mercosur The prospect of achieving Mercosur’s progressive new vision is fraught with challenges as much as it is inspired by hope. United States interests will continue to resist losing their economic and political grip in the region. This will not be the only obstacle facing the success of this new vision. The sheer magnitude of the project will require a serious commitment, and Latin America’s diversity of political beliefs and cultures could prove to be more marked than its homogeneity. For example, there are two Latin Americas at the moment. The first is a bloc of countries include Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Ecuador. They mistrust globalization, resists neo-liberalism, and seek to â€Å"give the state a large role in the economy.† The second bloc, including Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Colombia, embraces free trade and free markets and has a closer connection with Washington. Nonverbal Communication And Non Verbal Communication Essay

The quote by Drucker is a great example of how important it is for people to pay attention to nonverbal behavior, rather than only what is verbally communicated. Nonverbal communication has the ability to deliver information more effectively than verbal communication. Interpersonal communication is more effective when a conversation is complimented with non-verbal communication (Bello, et al, 2010). Nonverbal communication is not limited to any environment or surroundings because we are always communicating through nonverbal cues consciously and subconsciously. Whether a person is at a business meeting, bar, park, or his/her house, the transmission of verbal and nonverbal communication is continually being sent and received. A large part of communication between men and women in relationships occurs through non-verbal attributes, such as proxemics, kinesics, and vocalics. Without the use of non-verbal communication, most of the intended meaning of verbal communication would be lost or misinterpreted by the receiver. Proxemics in non-verbal communication explains the impact of distance between people in a conversation. Kinesics refers to the scope of how human beings use their body parts such as the whole body, arms, legs and their facial expressions and movement in communication to get across the emotion behind what they are saying out loud (Montague, 2013). Sex Education Essays (820 words) - Startup Cult, DraftCarson Hill

Sex Education What is the first thing you think about when you think of elementary school rites of passage? For me it is and always will be sex education. Only for me it was not such a time of wonder; it was more like a time of trying to keep my stomach from turning inside out. I remember it like it was yesterday, even though it was more like seven years ago. It was late April, headed into the summer of my fifth grade year. My teacher was Mr. Atkinson, a funny little man with a good background in American history and, conveniently, a fifth-grade sense of humor. Our class was located in a small portable, which was the trademark of overcrowded public schools in the area. Without air conditioning in the spring it was like a furnace in there, and that did nothing to help my situation. District policy in regards to sex education led to this learning phenomenon each spring, when the male teachers would take aside the fifth grade boys and the female teachers would do the same with the girls. I remember being rounded up like cattle and herded into the portable, which was doubly crowded as it bore the brunt of the fifth grade male population in the school. There was excitement, fear, wonder, apprehension, and a hundred other emotions swirling around the group of kids, and all of them were obvious to anyone watching. As we entered the small building, a mass of fidgety kids pinching through a small doorway in the corner of the room, it was like no other time I had been in there. The room seemed different somehow. Not worse, anyway, but there was a definite change between then and the last time I had been in there. Thinking back on it now, it was most likely the energy of all that curiosity, because when the speech began, a depth of knowledge previously unknown to us was suddenly and wonderfully available. Previously, that which we did know was as much fiction as reality. We scrambled for chairs at an increased speed, resulting in the expected griping, shoving and whining that we always heard. After we had all found chairs, those who had not sitting on the floor, the room quieted down and we all knew something was about to happen. Mr. Atkinson greeted us with his usual easily relatable anecdote. The crowd seemed to settle slightly, as if some energy had been lost when we saw that this new, exciting lesson was going to begin just as all the two-plus-two, preamble to the Constitution speeches had before it. But this lesson was more interactive. All throughout the first few minutes of our meeting hands shot up fast and sometimes naive, sometimes completely misinformed questions were launched at the three male teachers at the front of the class. Sometimes the answers incited giggles, while other times they induced debate, even looks of pure astonishment. After we had covered the basics of the human anatomy, which happened slowly but sped up when we were given a glimpse of what was to come, we moved on to some of the even hotter topics among the boys on the playground, relationships and sex. It started out fine, but I was in for a surprise. As the details of the lesson became clearer, I found my stomach feeling somewhat unsettled. I pictured in my mind all the things that the teachers were saying, and it was really disgusting to me. The strange feeling in my stomach grew more intense, and before I knew it I was queasy. It didn't end there, because soon my head began to swim, and my vision was fading in and out. I was scared not knowing what was happening to me, so in panic I stood up weakly and slid my feet one in front of the other until I was at the front of the room. I vaguely remember trying to tell Mr. Atkinson that I didn't feel good, but before I knew it I was falling to the ground. Luckily the teacher caught me, and through eyewitness accounts that have been related back to me more times than I like to think about I'm told he carried me to the nurse's office, where I regained consciousness on a small bed with a paper-covered pillow, which crinkled as I moved my head. The nurse comforted me and told me that I would be fine, and that my mom was on her way to

Free sample - Mending Wall Analysis. translation missing

Mending Wall Analysis. Mending Wall AnalysisI find myself struggling to decide if the author of the â€Å"Mending Wall† is unreliable or somewhere in the middle between reliable.   I feel a tugging in the direction of unreliable as the author seems not to know all the relevant information to consistently interpret the events accurately. The author conflicts with what he says and what he lacks to do or doesn’t do in that he is constantly questioning the purpose of the wall in his particular case and the necessity of it, but he does nothing to remove the wall or to discuss the need of the wall to his neighbor. This leaves me to interpret that the speaker is trying to express his ideas about barriers between people and the feeling or sense of security that walls can give, and that the wall in the poem is symbolic of the barriers people erect in relationships. An odd observation in this poem I noticed is that the author is speaking to the stones â€Å"stay where you are until our backs are turned!† it seems that the man may be so bored not having anyone to speak with that he would talk to anything. The only thing in the poem the neighbors says is â€Å"Good fences make good neighbors† so maybe the neighbor isn’t much of a conversationalist and maybe the author has only the wall to converse with which would make the wall really a better neighbor than the actual neighbor. It is amusing that the author referrers to his neighbor as an â€Å"old stone savage,† but, I believe the author means his neighbor is single mindedly focused on the wall and the idea of maintaining its existence will somehow make good relations with his neighbors. The one sided fixation approach to the maintenance of the wall by his neighbor is what prompted the author to call him an â€Å"old stone savage,† that won’t go against his father’s advice.

Distribution strategies within the marketing mix Essay - 1

Distribution strategies within the marketing mix - Essay Example However, wholesalers are incapable of marketing the products and also eat a big chunk of the profit. In such a scenario, telemarketing plays an important role for a company. The article is highly relevant from point of view of Distribution Strategies because with changing nature of businesses, the proliferation of technology and shorter product cycles, the distribution strategies must also evolve. A large number of customers are getting used to Internet and e-commerce. Telemarketing has been existent for a long time as an effective sales channel. However with growing customer base and complexity, larger organizations need to take help of specialized brokers and agents to take advantage of economies of scale. It saves considerable long-term costs for the company as well. Also the use of wholesalers for distribution must be though over rigorously. While they are a vital link in the distribution chain, they also act as a cost centre for a company. Economically, it may not make sense for small organizations to use external agents or brokers for this purpose. However, in order to venture into foreign markets, they may be required in small

Falcon Computer Company Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Falcon Computer Company - Case Study Example This essay discusses that discrepancy was largely witnessed as the promotions of the values were not appropriately communicated and enforced in practice by the management. The factors which were largely responsible for the existence of the discrepancy are as follows: 1. Lack of initiative from the management: The higher management was great in formulating the values to be followed by the employees but only formulation was not the very success of it.   2. The confidence among employees was not boosted: The employees were not provided with an opportunity to get the values to be worked across them. At the same time, they felt no space to implement a value and work accordingly. 3. Freedom of speech was lacking on the employee front: â€Å"Attention to detail is our trademark; our goal is to do it right the first time†. However, it was observed that the design flaws caused the main hurdle and in the first place, it needed to be corrected to prevent flaws in the forthcoming steps. 4. Openness was greatly lacking: The culture statement promising to encourage open, direct, person-to-person communication as part of the daily routine was not at all followed in practice. At Falcon, it was more of secrecy than openness. 5. Lack of management participation: Even after the value document was formulated and was expected to be followed, lack of management enforcement was greatly lacking to get the values embedded into the employees. 6. Lack of interest from the Employee side: Lack of interest from the employee side was a turnaround feature in exercising the values. They did not take it seriously and never bothered to come up with valuable suggestions so as to prove that there was an initiative from their side. They have never held the management accountable for the non-compliance of values. They instead have understood what was really emphasized in the organization namely hierarchy, secrecy and expediency. They never moved out of their comfort zone to take a stand. Th e lack of initiative also made the other employees follow the similar notion to take a back seat.

Personal development of employees within marks and spencer

Personal development of employees within marks and spencer Personal improvement or development involves the actions that enhance personal knowledge and individuals entity, improve the hidden talent potential, and develop talents. It improves the individuals life standards and makes him professional person that can easily convert his dreams into the reality. The word personal development is not only related to the individuals skills and attitude it also improves the behaviors, attitude and ethics of others. At the end we can say that personal development is also plays a vital role in the improvement of the organizations structure that can be a organizational strategies, evaluation methods, and provide help to improve the strategies of the organization. Personal development is vast topic and it provides a good help in the dynamic business environment because of personal development the individual can improve his skills and knowledge that helps to develop the strategical ambitions of the organization. And these improved skills like knowledge, attitude, and behavior are vary important and necessary to achieve the long term goals and ambitions of the organization in a real sense. The organization that I have chosen for this assignment is Marks Spencer that is doing business of retail out let in the United Kingdom (UK). Since the 1880s, it is doing business on the strict customs that is spread in all over the United Kingdom (UK). Now the Marks Spencer is considered as the one of the very famous in the retail outlets. Even in the services of food the Marks Spencer has created it good name in the eyes of the customer in the whole United Kingdom (U K). Particularly in 1990s there was bid decline in the sales of the Marks Spencer and as well as overall performance of the organization. But with a lot of changes now the Marks Spencer is offering the high quality products at very reasonable prices to attract and win the confidence of its customers. First of all in this assignment I tried to identify and evaluate the individuals skills and behaviour that is necessary to fulfil the aims and objectives of the Marks Spencer. And after that I am going to discuss the leadership development and personal development tools and techniques. Strategy is direction to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization. OR Strategy is track through the organization can achieve its long term plans. Strategy provides a way to organization through which organization can fulfill its objectives by using its resources in a dynamic environment to congregate the requirements of the market. The mission statement of the Marks Spencer is Making inspirational quality accessible to all And the vision statement of the Marks Spencer is The standard against which all others are measured The values of the Marks Spencer are Quality, value, service, innovation and trust Marks Spencer wishes to expend its business all over the world and it can be achieved by the companys strategies of to understand the global culture, to select the proper target market and by niche market and in a real sense this is the main objective and aims of the Marks Spencers to be achieved. Evaluate the strategic skills required of the leader to achieve the strategic ambitions The strategic goals of the Marks Spencer is to be the number one in United Kingdom (UK) market and as well as to expand it business activities. Leader plays a vital role in the progress of the organization because the leaders have the future vision and direction for the employees and for the whole organization to achieve its objectives and goals efficiently effectively. The headship has the ability to bring the change in the organization without the disturbance of the strategies and working of the organization. So the headship improvement/development is a necessary thing for Marks Spencer to achieve its objective and goals. This organization must have to render the opportunities for the leaders to enhance their skills by giving the headship training and this training can change the style of doing business of the organization. It is not necessary that every leader requires a same level of training. The training can be different for different leaders. So the headship development is a necessary tool for the Marks Spencer to achieve its strategic goal and objectives. Leadership skills and knowledge is necessary to achieve the ambitions of the organization without the competencies of the leaders it is very difficult for the organization to achieve the organizational objectives. Different skills are required for the leadership to achieve the goals are Communication skill is very important and plays a vital role fro the improvement of the itself leaders and for the organization as well because if the leaders have not the communication skill they can not make progress and even they are not able to communicate with the other peoples and colleagues as well. Hence the communication skill is necessary. Problem solving and decision making skills are also necessary for the headship. The leaders must have the problem solving skill and he is able to solve the issues of the currently facing by the organization and the leader must be able to take a good and favorable decision for the betterment of the Marks Spencer. The leaders must have the skill to adopt the changes and he will be able to bring a favorable change in the environment of the organization so that the organization can run its business activities efficiently and can make progress. The leaders must have the honesty and flexibility skill so that they can make the honest and fair decision for the improvement of the organization and to achieve the organizational goals. And the leaders must have the skill of providing direction to its staff and the skill to cover and solve the issues of the employees and organization. The current skills of the leaders of Marks Spencer leaders are: Communication skill, work value skill, skill of honesty truthfulness, the skill of self-assurance, headship ability and skill of listening The leaders must have the skill to critically scan the environment by using the PESTL factors. Interpersonal skill so that the leaders can exchange the information with one an other without any hesitation, the time management skill so that the leaders can manage the time between their personal and professional life and the leaders must have the ability to take initiative with out any fear and for the betterment of the organization. As well as the existing skill concern the leaders of the Marks Spencer have the communication skill, honesty skill, headship ability and listening skill but they dont have the skill to take initiative, skill to scan the environment, Time management skill, the skill of adoptive and flexibility skill. Proper evaluation process and proper training of the leadership will be required in near future to achieve the organizational aims and goals. 2.1 The opportunities those are necessary to support the leadership development. 360 degree response analysis 360 degree feedback is a tool to measure and analyze the leadership improvement. So because of this I choose 360 degree feedback to support the leadership development. This tool is used to exploit the skills and competencies of headship. 360 degree feedback includes the feedback or response from reports, managers, primary and secondary stakeholders and as well as self-response. This tool will provide the improved skills and enhance the attitude of the headship so in this regard it will be very helpful for the headship. This 360 degree provide response/feedback to the leaders on variety of skills like Decision-making teamwork setting up goals communiquà © and many other categories of headship The 360 degree feedback analysis wills also help the headship to recognize the strength and the places/areas of loop fall and ultimately provide help to the headship to make and improve the strategic plans of the organization. A strong 360 degree response/feedback identifies the internal behavior and skills of the leaders that how to communicate with others in the critical situation and how to face the challenges. Another excellent personal assessment tool for employees, managers, and executives is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), a popular and fascinating assessment tool that helps people self-identify: How they prefer to direct or conserve their energy How they process and organize information How they tend to make decisions How they prefer to interact with people What blind spots they have as a result of these preferences Another assessment tool is Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) This is one of the best tool to analyze/assess the performance of the leaders/headship, workers etc. This tool helps the leadership to identify their skills like. How can leaders favor to save their vigor How can they flow information frequently How can they make influential decisions for the organization How can they communicate with others in a good way Some important opportunities that are helpful to promote the leadership development are as under Educational opportunities: Education is very important for the headship development of any organization. Education plays a vital role for development of leadership. So the educational opportunities are the key factor for headship improvement because without getting proper education no body can do any thing properly hence the leadership must have to identify the opportunities that are related to education and that can improve the performance of the organizations leaders. Training opportunities: Another opportunities that is very important for the organizations leaders that is to explore the training opportunities for the employees. Because of the training the leaders can improve the performance of the staff members and other low level employees. Development opportunities: To develop the staff and employees and as well as the leaders is very necessary for the organization and plays a vital role in the betterment and the success of the organization. Career planning opportunities: To explore opportunities that are in favor of the headship and as well as for the organization but with the opportunities of career planning this thing is no be neglected that the career of employees is very important so to identify opportunities that will not affect the career of the employees. 2.2 The example of one year personal development plan Skills are very important for the organization while conducting a kill audit of the Marks Spencer I as a manager identify the skills that are necessary for the headship development are as under Skill of communicate, flexibility skill, adoptive skill, work value skill, skill of honesty truthfulness, the skill of self-assurance, headship ability, skill of listening, the skill to cover the issues, the skill of good writing. These are very important skills for the improvement of headship of the organization The skills that need to be improved are: The skill of flexibility, adoptive skill, how to cover the management issues, headship issues, the skill of truthfulness and integrity, ability to watch the forecasted picture, multitask. These are the main parts of the organization where the loop falls are identified. How to improve the above skills: The above deficiencies of the skills can be improved by many ways. These skills can be improved through proper channel and by giving the proper training to the staff and the headship as well. By giving the some improvement and enhancement programs through the proper institute these loop falls can be improved and removed. But to remove these loop falls the headship requires the full attention and proper evaluation of the employees. To permanently remove these loop falls the organization needs the proper financial resources and to manage and allocate these resources is not an easy task. So the leaders needs to proper emphases on the management performance. Hence the leaders identified the financial resources and proper institutes where the employees can take training on the loop falls and can remove that loop falls. So the leaders can allocate the sufficient fund to perform this task efficiently and effectively. To record the progress I as a manager evaluate the organization by monthly or twice in a month in the initial stages either the employees are working better after getting the training or not. And with the passage of time I as a manager evaluate the performance of the employees and the result are very different from the previous performance. Hence the performance and working of the employees and management of the organization is improved very well. 2.3 Implementation process for the development plan Goals are very important for the success of the organization because without identifying the goals of the no any organization can make success. Total focus of the Marks Spencer of the retail outlet of United Kingdom (UK) is on some of the main important and key development goals are as following 100% have possession of Brand: The organizations (Marks Spencer) aim is to sell only own products and items so that the organization can give the guarantee to its consumers to provide the quality, value and after sale services that the organization promise to deliver. Expand High-Growth Areas of house magnificence: House basis business is growing rapidly with house fixtures and gifts are the faster improving sectors. Magnificence, although comparatively small, but it is also increasing day by day. Improve the Supply Chain: Marks Spencer whishes to watch the considerable benefits from the repute of the supply chain management. Marks Spencer also wishes to achieve the greater improvements in the quality, after sale services and easy accessibility. Marks Spencer also want to be the number one in the United Kingdom (UK) and as well as all over the world. By capturing response and feed back of the headship the Marks Spencer wants to improve the strategic goals and strategies. Because feedback is very important for the success of the organization and for the management as well so the Marks Spencer wishes to improve the feedback program of the leadership. And by taking response from the management. To achieve the organizational goal is the key task for the organization. So to achieve the strategic goals of the organization planning is very important. Marks Spencer is achieving his organizational goals by evaluating the performance of the employs and by making future strategies and to cut the long term strategic goals of the organization into the short term goals so that the goals can be achieved easily. Marks Spencer proper monitor the performance of the employees and staff against the task given to them and take decisions to make this thing possible and effective. The performance monitoring program is very good in Marks Spencer and this organization takes the possible measurements to achieve the strategic goals and break the long term goals into short term goals hence when the short term goals are achieved it means the long term goals are automatically achieved. The leadership of this organization is always busy in providing the superior tasks and good training but after that the leader wants the superior result in response. Assessment of the achievement of outcomes of the plan against original objectives: Yes all the things have achieved like development need, objectives and outcomes. Development needs of this organization are Decision-making, teamwork, setting up goals and how to communicate with other employees. And all the outcomes of the organization are achieved because the organization increases its profit by the end of this financial year. All the strategic aims and plans of the organization were well defined and organized properly. All these activities were monitored properly by the management so because of this all the goals of this organization achieved very well and according to plan. In next time I as a manger dont think about the changing of the strategies of the organization because organization is working properly and increases productivity day by day and the performance of the employees is also going good. The impact of the achievement of objectives on strategic ambitions: Objectives play a vital role in the success of the organizations success. The impact of the achievement is positive on the strategic goals o f the organization because if the organization achieves his goals step by step and go forward step by step then obviously it will put the best and positive effect on the aim of organization. The trust of the customers will increased by this thing and the brand equity will also be increased. Definitely when the performance and turn over ration of the organization will increase and the organization will achieved its defined strategic objectives than i will make a new mission statement of my organization. Now this organization is need to going globally and has to expend its business activities in all over the world. And after that obviously the Marks Spencer will make new strategic marketing plans to promote its business activities all over the world. While going globally the organization needs to improve its marketing plans and needs to diversify its recruitment process because work force diversity is very important for any organization to be successful in the global market. And the organization needs to know the culture of the other countries before going globally. After doing all these things effectively and efficiently the organization achieved its impact that was the organization looking for. The positioning and targeting of the organization was very effective and good and the strategies for going global were also proved that it was in favour of the organization. The vision statement of the organization was very nice and the customers were attracted by this new statement. Because of the new marketing strategies and target marketing the organization achieved the  £20K profit in the recent financial year. 3.3 Yes almost all the development needs achieved but this is not enough because the organization wants to be the number one in all over the world. And yes all the development objectives achieved by the organization and all the outcomes that were needed to the organization were achieved by the organization. Yes the achievement impact on strategic ambitions has been evaluated and analysed. Successful strategies and by the proper targeting marketing the strategic ambitions of the organization achieved and evaluated. No there is no need to auction the existing development of the organization. And yes of course the development needs that are required to the organization in future are identified properly that is organization needs to go global and for this it needs more finances are competent skills are required. As well as the concern about the new development objectives that are also be identified that the organization wants to be the number one in all over the world and wishes to expand it s business activities globally. 4.1 Employers have a lawful duty to make sure that the work surroundings and work practices are secure and that the fitness of their employees is not damage by the job that they perform. The managers persistent to contribute in Work Well a targeted anxiety management programme. The Marks Spencer also contributed in the business Health and recital business study Marks and Spencer introduced precautions for Fire, Health and Safety performance, based on a Combination of self-assessment and expert inspections every three months. An improved Asbestos management plan has also been introduced. So because of health and safety program the marks and Spencer decreases its cost of production in a long run and also minimize the uncertainty of the organization. It reduces the average rate of accidents due to negligence and due to safe environment the attendance of employees is improved. The marks Spencer is promoting its health Safety program by introduces a community investment program that emphasis on four areas employability, education, health and community safety. Hence because of the efficient health Safety program the Marks Spencer is successful in reducing the rate of accidents by 25 percent and adds the 8 percent increase in the profit. All these activities definitely helped the Marks Spencer to achieve the strategic goals and to expand its business activities into the new markets of the world. In this assignment I identified the different individual/personal skills of the leaders of the Marks Spencer to fulfill the objective and aims of the organization. And I also had made effort to explore and evaluate the current and future skills of the leaders to enhance the performance of the management and that can improve the productivity of the organization. And at the end I tried to make the personal development plan for the Marks Spencer for one financial year in which I audit the skills of the leaders and identified different skills that need to be improved and that helps the deliberate goals of the organization in the current dynamic business environment. Hence the marks Spencer is really needed to change in its strategies while going global up to some extant so that it can achieve its global objectives.

The Effects of Cultural Assimilation: Conformity vs. Unorthodoxdy

The Effects of Cultural Assimilation: Conformity vs. Unorthodoxdy â€Å"Cultural assimilation is a complex and multifaceted process that first involves immigrants learning the language, cultural norms, and role expectations of the absorbing society, and further changes in attitudes†, or so it is explained by Dejun Su, Chad Richardson, and Guang-zhen Wang, in their article, â€Å"Assessing Cultural Assimilation of Mexican Americans: How Rapidly Do Their Gender-Role Attitudes Converge to the U. S. Mainstream? † (764).Throughout history and also present day society, cultural assimilation is easy to be identified, thanks to the â€Å"melting pot† quality of North America. Also, cultural assimilation is questioned about the effects it has on various groups of immigrants. Effects, such as the loss of one's identity, the struggle to attain success in the new country, the loss of one's heritage and unique background, conflict between family and friends and stereotypical discrimination in society, are demonstrated in varying degrees by the past and present generations of immigrants from the countries of Mexico, Japan and the Middle East.Throughout history, Mexican immigrants have continuously crossed the boarder into America for the chance of a new life. However, coming to a new country inevitably has it's consequences, and the pressures of assimilation are always present. During a time of great immigration of European citizens into the United States, Mexican immigrants were not so much of a concern throughout the whole country.Katherine Benton-Cohen supports this idea in her article â€Å"Other Immigrants: Mexicans and the Dillingham Commission of 1907-1911†, by explaining that, â€Å"Unlike Japanese immigration in California—which had set international diplomatic maneuvers in motion, in this period ‘American officials generally viewed Mexican immigration as a local labor issue,' not a national or international policy questionà ¢â‚¬ (39). As a result, the Mexican immigrants were not so quick as to forget their culture, but as long as they were willing to work for small wages, this resistance did not bother American's.Benton-Cohen also points out that â€Å"While the Mexicans are not easily assimilated, this is not of very great importance as long as most of them return to their native land after a short time†(Benton-Cohen, 38). This resulted in the effects that the Mexican immigrants were unable to attain higher wages, or to gain success in America. However, new effects came into account as time went on, and more Mexicans continuously moved to America. Compared to past Mexican immigrant challenges, present day effects have drastically changed. As the population of Mexican immigrants has grown overtime, so has the attention and concern towards their living and adaptation to a new country. It is believed that in the article â€Å"The Kids are (Mostly) Alright: Second-Generation Assimilation† w ritten by Richard Alba, Philip Kasinitz and Mary C. Waters, that â€Å"In general, the second generation is doing much better than its parents in educational attainment and is less concentrated in immigrant jobs† (763). However, this does not justify the fact that the pressures of cultural assimilation are much more developed in today's society than in the past.Alba then goes on to point out that â€Å"The overwhelming majority of the second generation is completely fluent in English†¦ Yet most of its members have not reached parity with native whites, and many experience racial discrimination† (Alba, 763). This statement goes to show that the newer society of Mexican Immigrants find that resisting cultural assimilation, is a greater risk than when the older generations came to find meager jobs. Another example of the effects the newer generation must face, would be the struggle to be successful in school. In the article, â€Å"Immigrant Families and Children (Re) Develop Identities in a New Context†, the author, Mariana Souto-Manning, talk about a young Hispanic boy she had in class, and the effects of his mother's attempt for cultural assimilation had on him. When Souto-Manning meets to discusses the boy, his mother confesses, â€Å"I decided to give him an American name†¦ so that no one would know he is Mexican. So that he would have a better chance to be successful in school than his brothers† (402).Based on experience, she thought that by changing the boys name from Idelbrando to the American name Tommy, she could save him from the â€Å"cultural stereotypes that might hinder his schooling experience† (Souto-Manning, 402). However, she also left him vulnerable to the effects of cultural assimilation that are the loss of one's identity, and the loss of one's heritage and unique background. Idelbrando is not the only Mexican immigrant who has been effected in this way. In fact, it is common for many Mexican immigra nts to change their name, but it doesn't stop there. If the belief that cultural assimilation makes it easier for Mexican immigrants to become successful, then the immigrants would need to change much more than their name's; going as far as to cast their own culture to the side and fully assimilate to the American culture. Another example of complete cultural assimilation and it's consequences, would be in Joy Kogawa's Novel Obasan. In this novel, the main character, Naomi, and her Japanese family are faced with the discrimination and cruel treatment of Japanese-Canadians that was practiced in Canada at the time of World Was II.Still, throughout all the hardship and pressures of conformity she was faced to go through, Naomi managed to keep much of her Japanese roots that were apart of her since birth. At one point in the novel, Naomi points out the differences in her and her brother's lunches and describes,â€Å"My lunch that Obasan made is two moist and sticky rice balls with a sal ty red plum in the center of each, a boiled egg to the side with a tight square of lightly boiled greens† (182). In this description, it is evident that Naomi remains accustomed to her Japanese upbringing. On the other hand, Naomi explains that â€Å"Stephen has peanut-butter sandwiches, an apple, and a thermos of soup† (Kogawa, 182). Therefore emphasizing that, unlike Naomi, her brother Stephen does not hold strong to his Japanese culture, and falls to the pressures of cultural assimilation. Naomi then goes on to explain how â€Å"She [Obasan] mends and re-mends his [Stephen] old socks and shirt which he never wears and sets the table with food, which he often does not eat. Sometimes he leaps up in the middle of nothing at all and goes off†¦ â€Å" (Kogawa, 259).Sadly, Naomi's explanation suggests that Stephen has gone as far as to shun anything to do with his Japanese Culture. Another example of Stephen's reluctance, is when Naomi asks Stephen what there Aunt Em ily is like, and he replies, â€Å"She's not like them† while â€Å"jerking his thumb at Uncle and Obasan† ( Kogawa, 259). Additionally, this behavior is an example of how cultural assimilation can effect the bonds of family and friends, and cause conflict between them. While the percentage of Japanese immigrants traveling to North America is ot as prominent as in the past, the Japanese culture is still ever present throughout society. As well, after World War II, Japanese immigrants seemed less of a threat, and their cultural differences slowly became more acceptable among society. However, the pressures of cultural assimilation are not completely eliminated for this culture. People of Japanese heritage living in North America, today, still feel the pressures of cultural assimilation, but mostly in the effect of stereotyping. For instance, in the article â€Å"Japanese International Female Students' Experience of Discrimination, Prejudice, and Stereotypes† by au thors Claude Bonazzo and Y. Joel Wong, it is acknowledged that â€Å"Portrayals of Japanese culture and the Japanese in recent Hollywood movies such as The Last Samurai, Lost in Translation, and Memoirs of a Geisha might play a role in shaping Americans' perceptions and stereotypes of Japanese international students† (paragraph 5).In otherwords, they believe that Americans may get the wrong impression of the Japanese culture, which create false myths and unrealistic stereotypes for people of Japanese culture. Bonazzo then goes to explain how â€Å"Another common stereotype that Asians living in the United States encounter is the racialization of their ethnicity†¦ Americans have the tendency to lump Asians of different ethnic groups into one homogenous racial category by downplaying ethnic differences† (Bonazzo, paragraph 16).Thus proving, that although the pressure to assimilate to the North American culture is not as strong, Japanese immigrants are now pressured with living up to false stereotypes that the consequences of over-assuming can create. Before September 11th, conflict between the cultures of Americans and Middle Eastern immigrants, mostly were the result of their clashing religious practices. While America is a country of religious freedom, the most common religion here was, and is Christianity. Likewise, the common religion practiced in the Middle East is Islam. However, although it is legally acceptable for Muslim immigrants to practice their religion in America, there was still controversy as to the acceptability among Christian Americans. For instance, in the article â€Å"Islam in America†, written by authors Ghosh, Abel, Lieblich, Scherer, Newton-Small, Dias, Steinmetz and Ford, a Christian preacher, Reverend Wayne Devrou, claims that â€Å"The political objective of Islam is to dominate the world with its teachings†¦ and to have domination of all other religions militarily† (paragraph 4).This idea, howeve r, is not true, because it is often the case that Americans misunderstand the religion of Islam, and in some cases, it is the Christian extremists who try to push their religion onto the Middle Eastern immigrants. Gosh then goes on to explain how, â€Å"To be a Muslim in America now is to endure slings and arrows against your faith–not just in the schoolyard and the office but also outside your place of worship and in the public square, where some of the country's most powerful mainstream religious and political leaders unthinkingly (or worse, deliberately) conflate Islam with terrorism and savagery† (Ghosh, paragraph 12).This explanation illustrates the effects of Middle Eastern immigrants not assimilating, and the conflict is causes between the two cultures. Then on September 11th, 2001, the cause of conflict between Middle Eastern immigrants and Americans drastically changed. When a group of terrorist of Middle Eastern ethnicity, were responsible for the death of th ousands and the devastation of the whole country of the United States, an idea called Islamophobia settled into the minds of many American's.In his article, â€Å"Confronting Islamophobia in the United States: framing civil rights activism among Middle Eastern Americans†, Erik Love states that â€Å"Islamophobia’ is a problematic neologism, and the one that is currently the most common term used to refer to bigotry, discrimination, policies and practices directed towards Islam and a racialized group of people that includes Muslims†, which verifies that after 9/11 the discrimination of Islam is not the main focus of terrified Americans (402).Americans instead focus on the distinction of appearance that is particular to the Middle East race. Love also argues that, â€Å"Islamophobia, in short, affects a racialized group of people- Middle Eastern Americans- /that, like any racialized group, is in fact comprised of an irreducibly diverse collection of individuals w ho identify with many different ethnicities, nationalities and religions† which in other words means that not all Middle Eastern immigrants are a terrorist or a threat in anyway to the United States (Love, 402).In fact, when first noticing the presence of a person of a Middle Eastern race, for some Americans, the word Muslim no longer automatically comes to mind. Terrorist is the word that is now associated with this race, and because it all is based on the appearance of the race, no amount of cultural assimilation can extinguish this effect of stereotypical discrimination still present today.Furthermore, because the effects of cultural assimilation depend on the circumstance, the time period, the culture and the person, each output is different as to whether keeping a strong hold on to one's unique culture when pressured by a new environment is the right thing to do. Also, as time progresses, so does the idea that complete cultural assimilation is not necessary for immigrants to survive in a new country; and more people are becoming proud of their cultural background. In fact, on the website, Thinkexist. com a quote by Donna Taylor can be found to support the idea that our country is â€Å"†¦ no longer a melting pot where assimilation is the goal, but a great mosaic where each culture adds its uniqueness to make the whole better† (Donna Taylor Quotes). Finally, although Cultural Assimilation is still present today, there is less pressure to conform to one's surrounding, and overall, there is a more open-minded feeling towards the blends and coincidence of different cultures.

spelling pronunciation - definition and examples

Definition The use of a pronunciation that is based on spelling rather than in accordance with a words conventional pronunciation, such as the increasingly common pronunciation of the once-silent letters t and d in often and Wednesday, respectively. Also called over-enunciation.D.W. Cummings notes that spelling pronunciations are more typical of American English than British English, perhaps because of the national predisposition among Americans to follow the written word more than the spoken (American English Spelling, 1988). The converse of spelling pronunciation is pronunciation spelling: the creation of a new spelling form on the basis of pronunciation. See Examples and Observations below. Also see: Allegro SpeechDivergent SpellingSlurvianWanna Construction Examples and Observations Words borrowed from French such as hour, honour, and honest came into English without an initial [h] as did hospital, habit, and heretic, but the latter have acquired an [h] from the spelling. The word herb is pronounced with an [h] and without one (the latter mainly in the US), and though hotel has an initial [h], one still sometimes hears an (h)otel. . . .The traditional pronunciation of forehead is forrid, but it is common nowadays to hear fore-head, particularly in the US. This is an example of reversing a sound change on the basis of spelling. . . .Many people believe that the spelling is a guide to the correct pronunciation and argue, for instance, that it is wrong to include an intrusive r in the idea of it or I saw him, because there is no r in the spelling.(Barry J. Blake, All About Language. Oxford University Press, 2008) Spelling Pronunciation and Language ChangeSpelling pronunciations are one symptom of the shift from the aural to the visual bias. . . . A sampling of spel ling pronunciations provided by [Fred] Householder includes the following, all of which have modern pronunciations that are closer to their spelling than were their older, traditional pronunciations: yesterday, Wednesday, diphtheria, diphthong, harass, kiln, victuals, conch, draught, certain, author, yes, housewife, gold, bomb, jaunt, laundry, sewer (1971, 252-53).Though underestimated, spelling pronunciation is an important and respectable factor in language change. . . . It seems likely that something like spelling pronunciation was part of the process that led to the leveling of dialect differences in late Middle and Early Modern English. Michael Samuels says that the evolution and spread of standard English in the 15th and 16th centuries was primarily through the agency of writing, not speech (1963, 87).(D.W. Cummings,  American English Spelling: An Informal Description. The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1988) Middle English Spellings and Contemporary PronunciationsSome word s have not yet been accorded spelling-pronunciation, the words choler, debt, doubt, receipt, salmon, sceptre, victuals retaining the pronunciation better suggested by the Middle English spellings colere, dette, doute, receite, samon, ceptre, and vitailes. Words of a more literary flavour, e.g. victuals, are now occasionally heard with a spelling-pronunciation, and condemnation of such pronunciations as ignorant will probably not prevent their ultimate universal acceptance.(D. G. Scragg, A History of English Spelling. Manchester University Press, 1974) Pronunciation SpellingA pronunciation spelling is a spelling that more closely reflects the pronunciation of a given word than the words traditional spelling does. Over time the new spelling may become as acceptable as the original spelling, as is the case with the pronunciation spelling bosun for boatswain. Many writers use pronunciation spellings, as wanna for want to or talkin for talking, to convey speech.(The American Heritage Gui de to Contemporary Usage and Style. Houghton Mifflin, 2005)
